WeLOOP recently represented the CALIMERO project at the MCV Conference 2024 in Lille, France, delivering a thought-provoking presentation titled “Assessing the Circularity of Bio-Based Products in LCSA: Challenges and Recommendations”. The team, including Margarida Vidinha, Dieuwertje Schrijvers, Alexandre Charpentier Poncelet, and others, shared innovative approaches to enhancing sustainability in bio-based industries through advanced Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA).

The CALIMERO project, a collaborative effort with organizations such as LIST, Neovili, Contactica, and IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, focuses on advancing the European bio-economy by promoting sustainable practices in key sectors like construction, textiles, and biochemicals. The presentation highlighted CALIMERO’s comprehensive toolbox, featuring enhanced indicators tailored to bio-based industries, modeling strategies for circularity, and the inclusion of social and economic dimensions to create a holistic sustainability assessment framework.

WeLOOP’s team presented key findings, including a case study on natural fiber insulation derived from end-of-life newspapers, demonstrating innovative circular solutions such as pyrolysis for biochar production and closed-loop recycling for construction applications. They identified critical challenges in modeling circularity, emphasizing the need to adapt established methodologies like the EU Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) guidelines and advocating for the use of consequential LCA to evaluate the full impact of circularity strategies.

The presentation also introduced 48 circularity parameters developed by CALIMERO, addressing strategies such as increasing recycled content, enhancing energy recovery rates, and minimizing quality degradation of recycled materials. These tools aim to bridge existing gaps and empower industries to align with Europe’s bio-economy transition goals.

CALIMERO’s innovative framework underscores the importance of collaboration between academia, industry, and environmental institutes to achieve sustainable outcomes. WeLOOP’s contributions at the MCV Conference highlighted their dedication to driving innovation in sustainability assessments, setting the stage for continued progress in the bio-based economy.
