The recent webinar hosted by the CALIMERO project on “Accounting for ecotoxicity in LCAs and SSbD: ProScaleE – an enabling method for meeting forthcoming regulatory requirements” was a resounding success. Industry professionals gathered to explore the ProScaleE method, a pivotal tool designed to evaluate ecotoxicological potentials across product systems.

Attendees discovered how ProScaleE identifies ecotoxicological hot spots, mitigates environmental hazards, and ensures compliance with current and future regulations governing chemical safety and sustainability. This innovative approach leverages consolidated environmental exposure and ecotoxicity scoring models, rooted in REACH-based data, to calculate aggregated ecotoxicity potentials throughout product life cycles. It provides a robust performance-based indicator applicable in LCAs, Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) assessments, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), Product Environmental Footprints (PEFs), and upcoming regulatory frameworks such as the Construction Product Regulation (CPR) and Eco-design for Products Regulation (ESPR).

Key speakers included industry leaders like Martin Klatt from BASF SE, Athanasios Gkrillas from Dow Chemical, Pearl Nemeth from Anthesis-Caleb, Hanna Holmquist and Rosella Telaretti Leggieri from IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, and Tomas Rydberg, also from IVL. Their insights underscored the increasing demand for comprehensive assessments of human toxicity and ecotoxicity in products beyond current regulatory mandates.

The webinar provided a comprehensive overview of the ProScaleE scoring methodology, emphasizing its application across various life cycle stages—from production to end-of-life. Professionals specializing in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Risk Assessment (RA) found the webinar instrumental in adopting a straightforward approach to assess ecotoxicological potentials within production systems.
